Is that some sort of cover on the front knuckle coupler? Looks to be made out of tape.

Alex this is a boot they put over the knuckle to keep it clear of ice and snow since they swap ends with the engines for the run back to Denver. The boot is in the shape of a heart for Valentine's Day - thanks to the creative effort of Amtrak Conductor Brad Swartzwelter.
