It looks like the crane has a smoke stack extension that, when it's adjusted forward, allows the exhaust to still be expelled up. Clever design!

Very interesting and unique piece of railroad equipment. Thanks for sharing this gem.

Even with having friends in India there is only a little bit I actually know about India's railways, and one of those things is the the crane loco's GIPR lettering is likely for the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, a thing I don't currently see mentioned here.

Very unique - and I wonder if anyone would kit-bash this into a model for a model railroad layout? I would like to try it just for my own layout, but I wouldn't know where to find the parts or where to begin, let alone how I could possibly build it so that the crane arm could actually swing around in a 22' radius. Interesting piece of equipment. Kind of reminds me of the movie "Toy Story" and the collection of Sid's toys when woody gets "lost" and ends up in his house. There is a scene where a toy appears with a crane arm and hook on a pair of "Barbie" legs... a real toy "hooker"! LOL!!

Dana, those crane locomotives were also used in UK and Australia, so there might be makers in those countries which have kits or at least conversion parts. Thinking that I went and played in Google. A quick result is a company named Roxey Mouldings which has one where the crane base is on the smokestack base! from their page, "7L16 Neilson Crane Tank Two were bought by the South Eastern Railway, one by the Caledonian and three by industrial users. The SER locos were painted in full Wainwright livery and one survived into BR days. The Caledonian engine only ran until 1908, but the industrial locos worked until after WW2 and one of them is privately preserved. Our kit has a whitemetal body with nickel silver chassis and crane jib with cast engine. Alternative parts are included for an open or closed cab. Motor, Wheels and Gears needed to complete (See Options)" Ah, another UK outfit named Gladiator Models has kits for entire loco body or just the crane. Do a Google image search for "crane locomotive" with the words in quotes like that and both actual and model will come up. The images will show the great variety of crane locomotives and some kits and scratchbuilds as well.
