As a cyclist and a railroad enthusiast, I've ridden many rail trails. I'm always struck by how nicely the railway fit the terrain, and also I think how nice it must have been to ride the train. If that makes sense.

I visited the grade back in 2015, sad to see Northfolk southern gave up on it.

I ride the Virginia Creeper Trail quite often and find it wonderful. Few more impractical railroads exist in today’s world, and yet nary a ride goes by lest I wish to see an old N&W “Molly” treading that mismatched rail up horrendous grades, flanges squealing through impossible curves, all to serve mountain communities. It will ever be thus for me. Having watched 4501 scale Saluda my sentiments are similar.
