Traction motor comments bring to mind a 1962 book by Alvin Stauffer titled Pennsy Power which tells of a snowstorm with such fine particles they got through the motor ventilation system of PRR's GG1 locos and caused moisture collection which shorted out the motors. A temporary fix of silk screens was used & eventually the motor makers developed an epoxy coating for the armature windings which would even allow the traction motors to be demonstrated running underwater in a tank.
