This is "Scrubber Stone", which removes the sulfur dioxide from coal-fired flue gas, thus reducing a major contributor to "acid rain". At origin, the Hanson Quarry has a notably unusual full loop circular design, which minimizes the amount of track needed to load a train. Also unusual, the rock is quarried from underground, to access the high-calcium stone needed for the scrubbing process.
