Neat photo, you don’t see too many photos of these in service. Huge locomotives, some of the biggest every built.

Apparent sun position when OCP took original negative was around 9:30A-PT, so was possibly a No. 82 due by Oroville’s depot @ 8:40A-PT/5th col. on Rt. side of p.4 in WP Western Division Employee Timetable No. 23 eff. 01-Apr-1935 (ref. https://wx4.org/to/foam/sp/maps/perryETT/1935-04-01WP_Western23-SheldonPerry.pdf), or a following section of-same given lack-of class indicators. Location was near M/p 205.15 on 3rd subdivision (ibid.) w/OCP standing-on W side of Bridge St. overpass (then bridge #205.2±, trackage since realigned onto compound curves through there and o/pass replaced account new approach to W end of 1962 Oroville Dam project realignment). Track speed Stockton Yard to Oroville Yard (M/p’s 92 to 203) was then a maximum of 40MPH for freight, w/a 25 MPH freight max. beyond latter to Portola (M/p 321.4). Loco was last of WP’s 251-class 2-8-8-2’s from BLW in 1931, their largest steam (entire half-dozen retired c.1953) w/an overall length of 120 ft., 4½ in. and an operating weight of 1,073,350 Lbs. (engine + tender). They had 63 in. drivers w/a maximum t.e. of 150, 900 Lbs. including their Franklin type C-2 booster engine “cut-in” on the trailing truck; max. operating steam pressure was 235 p.s.i. (from Page 17 in WP 1938 Locomotive Register, ref. https://www.wplives.org/historical_archive_department/pdf/Locomotive_Roster_1938_ocr_optimized.pdf). Otto was among the best-known of the Colorado rail photographers, and certainly the most-prolific – this is also one-of 41 w/WP steam power that year in the Denver Public Library’s scans from their OCP negatives collection, Call No. OP-20016 (ref. https://denverlibrary.recollectcms.com/nodes/view/1058477?keywords=Otto+C.+Perry+memorial+collection+of+railroad+photographs&type=all&highlights=WyJPdHRvIiwiQy4iLCJQZXJyeSIsIm1lbW9yaWFsIiwiY29sbGVjdGlvbiIsIm9mIiwicmFpbHJvYWQiLCJwaG90b2dyYXBocyJd&lsk=e55e7b9b5cfc1545f3fd26bedfb57f69).
