An eastbound hotshot departs Portola. In just a few miles, the pines will give way to the sagebrush of the Great Basin deserts.
The B&L Local heads for the sawmill in Loyalton at sunset in the Sierra Valley. The locomotive is a former Western Pacific unit that has probably taken these rails many times.
