The outbound (westbound) train is ready to depart for the dry sort yard at Sawmill 5, west of Dayton. it is 3:40 p.m. PDT.
Switcher spotting cars in the middle of the mill. I think the wood on the centerbeams needs to be wrapped in plastic. Raw logs can be floated to the mill, arriving in the bay in the foreground o... (more)
The mill is cramped enough for space that raw logs and fresh cut boards can both be seen in this view.
Note the old roundhouse directly behind the engine! There's a lot of stalls, indicating that Simpson Logging Co. had lots of engines back in the day.
The Simpson Timber Co. sawmill is directly behind the photographer. Puget Sound & Pacific interchange track runs off to the left.
4 miles west of Shelton. The brilliant sunlight wouldn't last, typical Olympic Peninsula weather.
