On a warm September afternoon, Private Varnish ex New York Central observation car``Babbling Brook`` brings up the rear of Amtrak Adirondack as it skirts the rugged shores of Lake Champlain.

It was still lookin' good after all those years.

Built in 1949 by the Budd Co. for the New York Central Railroad as a 5 double bedroom, buffet, observation lounge, the Babbling Brook brings up the rear of Amtrak Adirondack tonight.

The 485, seen here near the end of its life on Amtrak, is one of the last two FL9s active on the roster. The 485 and 486 were only used for protect and work train service at this point.
