Still looking good in a fairly fresh early paint scheme.
Allegedly upgraded to 3000 HP but still looking exactly like its as-built U28C model, one of only four on the L&N and handed down via SBD.
Muzzled, second order unit.
Back in the good old days when we doing business here and could wander around at will. The first order of these were best. They came along before the government ruined that great GE chug.
EMD B unit 718 is lashed up with four Alco’s as L&N’s southbound freight arrives Corbin, Ky. on July 15, 1964 for a crew change.

Dead and shoved to the end of track was not a sign of the demise of this unit. These would carry on a few more years.
ACL only bought one SDP and this was it. It became SCL, then L&N, then SBD and wound up switching the yard in the coal country. How I would love to see a shot of this one in the glory days, hand... (more)
Though we weren't happy about the lack of engines, I think most railfans were happy that the new units had preserved "the greatest profile in dieseldom".
Shop forces have used a little ingenuity on the numberboards of this former-C&O unit now clad in the somber tones known as "stealth".
These units and slugs had become the yard switchers here in those days and as Corbin was a showplace, they had a nice paint job.
There was hope after the stealth scheme as this southbound coal train illustrated.
