There was a time when it was photographically worth the wait until the end of a train came along. Of course today, there's just an EOT hanging on the rear drawhead--hardly an attractive subject. I... (more)
In 1985, I knew trains wouldn't run over this bridge very much longer, so I decided to get just one more shot of a Seaboard System (ex-L&N) southbound coal train climbing upgrade across US 23 and ... (more)
Three L&N U25Cs are backing past a standing northbound empty train in the siding at Big Stone Gap. The trio is pushing Southern's Andover derrick and support train to a derailment in Dryden.
If your railroad company owns the track, it's usually pretty much expected who'll get a clear signal and who'll wait. At Big Stone Gap, an eastbound NS unit coal train winds it up after its engine... (more)

An eastbound unit coal train has just attained the top of the hill at the junction with NS (overhead signal bridge in the distance). The fall colors of 1988 were especially nice.
When CSX Transportation was still new, I really wasn't nuts about it. "My" railroads, like the L&N and Clinchfield, were gone, and with it a lot of individuality and charm. In the summer... (more)
