In a scene replete with contrasts, two Mt. Washington Railway trains pass each other just above the Waumbek Water Tank. Observe the impressive plumes from the smoke stack and sidestack exhaust on #2 as she makes the power move up the hill. Compare that with tiny whiffs of steam as #8 drifts down the grade using cylinder compression to slow her descent. While fall colors are peaking in the vicinity of the water tank, the terrain less than 1000 ft above is completely treeless and snow-covered. Although the day is otherwise dark and cloudy, a few patches of blue sky appear around the summit of the mountain above. Yep, just another average day on New England's highest peak.
