On a stormy spring afternoon, a pair of oversized MACs easily hustle a short manifest southward through the post-volcanic, post-floods scablands of eastern Washington as they bang across the south siding switch at Marengo. UP's Ayer Sub briefly parallels the abandoned Milwaukee Road right-of-way at this location; the fill behind the train is almost unrecognizable in this light as nature slowly reclaims it. Less than a minute prior to firing the shutter, this late-afternoon scene was entirely in shadow; a short time later, while driving west towards Ritzville, I would pass through a downpour. Sometimes, it's just pure luck that makes the difference between getting the shot and simply getting all wet.
