One can almost hear the long ago din and bustle of the Great Northern Railroad town of Wellington echo off the walls of the first snowshed on the line down to Skykomish. The structure is now part of the U.S. Forest Service's Iron Goat Trail. The original route from Berne to Scenic was by-passed with the construction of the new Cascade tunnel in 1928. On March 1st, 1910 two trains were destroyed and 96 souls were lost at Wellington in the worst avalanche disaster in American history, which is docu-dramatized in the book "Vis Major".
