A late afternoon line-up of RRL Grindrod locomotives at Transnet Freight Rail’s (TFR) Welkom station, from left to right. 91-04, 91-01, 91-03 and 36-01. The class 91’s were built by GE and imported from the USA in the 1970’s for the 610mm (2’0”) gauge line from Port Elizabeth to Avontuur, home of the famous Apple Express (see photo ID 328605). With the line seeing little traffic these days, some of these loco’s were up for sale and have ended up here, working on 1067mm (3’6”) gauge. Their original bogies were widened to accommodate the change in gauge. The class 36 is an ex-TFR class 36-200 (EMD SW1002)
