Remarks & Notes |
Nestled in a mountain valley in the middle of the South Island, Otira is lucky to see an hour of sunshine in the middle of winter, that’s if you can see the sky at all as this is an area often associated with the word ‘damp’. It is here that three banker locos are attached to the front of loaded coal trains to lift them up the 1-in-33 grade to Arthur's Pass, which includes the 8.5km (5.3 mile) Otira Tunnel. Way back on a July 2002 afternoon, five 7FDL-12 powered DXs put on an Alco-esque display as they begin to move a loaded coal train. The locos are enjoying a brief respite from the grade before it hits the full 3% just ahead of the train (the tracks to the left are level). Railpictures # 345754 was taken the following day in the hoar frost of these banker locos returning to Christchurch for their weekly servicing. |
