Takin' a break. White Pass Railroad Superintendent E.C. "Ed" Hanousek appears to strike a proud pose for me after hopping down from the cab of Rotary #1. The boss has called for the crew to take a break, not because they need one, but because he's feeling sorry for a batch of photographers who have been chasing his train on snowshoes for more than an hour and are beginning to have trouble keeping up. Up in the cab door, Rotary Pilot Alvin Gordon looks back to see just how far the stragglers are strung out. With the snow depths decreasing as the train approaches Fraser, and many of the photogs getting pretty tired, Superintendent Hanousek is planning to wait for everyone to get back in front of the train before making the final push toward Fraser Station. Once the Rotary Fleet takes off, a diesel-powered chase train will pull forward, pick up the photographers and also head to Fraser for a lunch break. When the White Pass folks advertised this trip, they made it clear that there would be some serious physical activity involved....and they were right on target with that warning.
