The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is celebrating 40 years of its existence this week. Far away from the massed enthusiasts, are the quieter, more tranquil reaches of the railway. Even on gala days it is possible to walk for hours in the deep valley at Farwath and not see another human being. Not a sound between trains except the soft hum of insects and spring birdsong. Whilst waiting for the NYMR's flagship locomotive 'Sir Nigel Gresley' to appear, I saw a badger snuffling about in the undergrowth and two deer bounding silently along the line-side. I will never be convinced that there is any other pastime that comes remotely close in offering such delicious experiences!
