Remarks & Notes |
What was no doubt state-of-the-art technology when it opened in 1979, the Minnesota Zoo Monorail now looks like an outdated throwback to the 1970s. Why did the zoo choose a monorail? They wanted a modern look for a modern zoo (the zoo itself opened in '78). The train - a "Unimobil Tourister" - was built by Universal Mobility, Inc, of Salt Lake City; the company was later acquired by Bombardier. Parts are virtually non-existant today; the zoo plans to retire the monorail in early September 2013 and tear our the track. |
