Amtrak train #77, a Los Angeles-bound San Diegan, is aglow in the late afternoon sun as it makes its final stop, at Fullerton, California, before arriving in L.A. The train is powered by SDP40F 509 and a former Great Northern F7B. Considering that 509 is just over a year old, the black paint on the pilot (and, in fact, the fuel tank as well) is peeling rather badly. This was a problem with the first order of SDP40Fs (Amtrak 500-539). (September 8th, 1974)
