Remarks & Notes |
Norfolk Southern SD70ACe #1101 speeds east at CP Glen Lyn on the late afternoon of February 20, 2021 as a westbound manifest freight occupies the southside main.
This piece of railroad was originally part of the East River Railroad Company chartered by the New River Railroad in 1872. The charters held by this company were the only practical routes to reach the Pocahontas Coal fields to the west which presented a problem for the early leadership of the Norfolk & Western since the New River group intended to hold up the N&W for as much as possible in order to capitalize on their investment in the railroad line. George Tyler, first president of the N&W, was eventually able to come up with an agreement to purchase all stock and charters owned by the New River Railroad. |
