ALCO in Schenectady.
Great Northern (GN) RS3 no. 229 (ALCO, 1953) is seen on display at the Museum of Innovation and Science (miSci) in Schenectady, NY; the city where the locomotive was built in 1953. It was originally owned by the Great Northern Railway, which is why it wears the paint scheme of a railroad that did not operate in New York State. After the GN traded in no. 229 for a newer locomotive in 1968, 229 went to the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad, then the Pinsley Lines, then the Mohawk and Hudson Chapter NRHS before being donated to the City of Schenectady in 1990.
New York state has the largest number of ALCO diesel locomotives working in everyday service. Here are some of them. Soon I hope to chronicle all of them.
Not
just heritage schemes, not just commemorative schemes - this album is devoted to some of the world's most interesting paint schemes, past or present.
