A lonely survivor prepares for a comeback.
The F40 was the perfect passenger train workhorse, and for years these were a staple on the local jaunts as well as heading up notable long haul journeys like the California Zephyr, Empire Builder and Southwest Chief. They have all but vanished, stripped of usable parts for resale or having met the torch when scrap prices rise.
Its great to see one in a shop, beginning to receive attention in the early steps of a return to life. The 16 cylinder 645 engine is seized up, but will be pulled and replaced with gen sets for the passenger trains. The unit will be refurbished and will serve in passenger service again as a power car and "shove platform".
Some may remember that an FT-B is still on the property and the eventual goal is to convert that to a HEP car as well.
