Last Of Its Kind
Ex: Norfolk Southern Nº 1580 is at the display yard at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum waiting for it’s time to be moved to the East Chattanooga Shops to be repainted back into its former self. Nº 1580 was purchased by the Norfolk Western in 1966 as the class unit for the SD40 series and served on the NW and its successor Norfolk Southern till it’s retirement in the mid to late 2000s. During the height of the Norfolk Southern’s 30th Celebration Nº 1580 would’ve become a candidate to be repainted back into its true heritage as an ambassador for NS public relations representing the Norfolk Western. Unfortunately, those plans fell through and the locomotive set in Altoona till recently. Unlike its kin Nº 3170, the NW SD40 was equipped with dual control stand, flexicoil truck with a trio of brake cylinder, an all-weather cab window, and a course the bell on the short hood. The locomotives will spend some time here at its temporary home till the restoration is completed then it will be shipped to the new owners.
