Budds Floating To Scrap. Early on the morning of Tuesday, March 4, 2025, NYNJ Rail moved 12 Budd built R-32s across New York Harbor for scrapping. The cars were loaded on the NYNJ 200 barge and powered across New York Harbor by McAllister Towing's 'Bruce McAllister'. After arrival in New Jersey, they will be moved one final time to the scrap yard.
Built by Budd in 1964, these cars were distinctive from previous NYC subway cars because of their stainless steel exterior, whereas previous cars had been painted. After 58 years of service, a series of retirement runs were operated in 2022. Many remain on the MTA NYCT Subway property for preservation and other uses.
