Pinky Lynton takes water at Bondad. Pinky was an engineer on the Rio Grande Southern. When the RGS abandoned in 1951 he went to the DRGW. Pinky was a qualified engineer but he was uncomfortable with the "big" K-36 and K-27 mikes so he usually worked as a fireman on the DRGW, which is why he is taking water here.
The DRGW narrow gauge was the last major steam operation in the U.S. The climb over 10,000 foot Cumbres pass was spectacular, with two engines handling 70 car trains. Hopefully these images convey some of the drama of mountain steam railroading.
