Remarks & Notes
Twenty-eight years after it crashed through the stationmaster’s office of Washington Union Station with a runaway train, GG1 4876 is one of the last group of operating GG1’s. Conrail and Amtrak have both withdrawn all GG1’s from service, leaving NJT’s fleet of thirteen units as the last operating examples. 4876’s carbody shows evidence of its hard 42-year life, with many body seams and welds showing. The big electric survives unrestored at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore.
