Remarks & Notes
Working upgrade at the Gallians crossovers, Amtrak 3, the westbound Southwest Chief, passes beneath the original ATSF canteliver signal bridges here as it pounds the jointed rails of the original Santa Fe Railway's transcontinental line while waging battle on the stiff grade of Raton Pass' eastern slope. The canteliver signal bridges on Raton are unique in that the staircases that lead up to the signal heads, used by signal maintainers, were installed by the Santa Fe to allow crews easier access during fierce winter conditions. Generally, stairs like this are seen as new additions on these relics of the past and Class I railroads try to enhance safety for maintainers.
