Steamscape - Apache Canyon. There are steam tourist trains scattered around the continental US, but nowhere can you photograph them with prettier scenery than in Colorado. The 64 mile long Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad surely offers the greatest variety of geography of any tourist railroad in the country. Pictured here is the afternoon train from Antonito to Chama as she blows for the Apache Canyon Crossing. In just a few minutes, she'll be topping the 10,000 ft. high Cumbres Pass. From then on, it's all downhill to Chama.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
