Remarks & Notes
USAX 1401 has the following marked under the cab numbers: USMC 296619. This GP9 was constructed by EMD in August 1959 with a low nose as Southern Pacific 5873. SP later renumbered it to 3709, then sold it to the U.S. Army Transportation School as their 002. After that, it became Department of Transportation 1401 and then United States Marine Corps 296619. At one time, the lettering on the side said U.S. ARMY but the Army portion has since been painted out - most likely because this unit is assigned to USMC's Camp Pendleton, just north of Oceanside, California.
