Wake up and smell the coal smoke! Coming through the door from the Machine Shop to the Engine House, this is the scene that greets visiting photographers from around the world each morning, during the annual February Photo Shoots at the Nevada Northern Railway. Lined up before you, the museum's four active locomotives are being made ready for the day's activities. The sense are immediately overtaken with the constant din of blower hiss, the smell of oil and coal smoke, and the sight of steam clouds wafting around the machinery. Immediately in front of the camera, Alco Consolidation #93 will shortly be assigned a hopper train. A freight train of wooden box cars awaits the high-stepping 10-wheeler #40. Beyond it, the orange Alco RS-3 #109 will be handling the yard switching duties today. In the distance, the blue and yellow SD9 #204, which is normally the workhorse of the museum fleet, will get to sit this one out, unless one of her sisters has a problem. She's the standby power for today.
