The Liberty Liner - One of only two such streamliners built in 1941 by the St Louis Car Company. These sets could reach speeds of 110 mph but were limited by the curves along the routes they served. They were designed to better move commuters with more efficiency then both the steam and diesel trains of the day. Originally built for the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee, they could also be found on Chicago's elevated line. In 1963, they were acquired by Philadelphia's Red Arrow Lines (now SEPTA). The set above is operable and can be seen on special occasions at the Rockhill Trolley Museum. It's been some time since it last ran however, as it needs a little love (and new set of resistors, which have since been donated). The second set has been restored to it's original livery but is not operable. It can be seen on display at the Illinois Railway Museum. Click here to see a photo by John West of this set in operation.
