On October 28, 1983, NJT took the last GG-1s out of revenue service. The following day, they ran several excursions from Matawan to Newark behind three remaining units. This was the Farewell to the GG-1 day. GG-1's did not operate in regular service through Matawan, giving all the railfans in the shot something special to witness. (There had previously been at least one revenue run of GG-1s from Matawan when one rescued a stranded train.)
