The 6473 was the lead unit of a welded rail-train that became a runaway because not enough hand brakes were set on it. Its south bound journey came to a crushing stop after running head-on into the Q522 freight train bound for Birmingham that was awaiting more blocks before proceeding on. The alert and quick thinking crew of Q522 onboard loco 7847 got out of their train when they noticed the crossing gates ahead of them activating.
