Remarks & Notes
A nifty five pack of SD40-2's lead an American President Line stack train westbound at Lake Point, Utah. The majestic Oquirrh Mountains provide a rugged backdrop for the APLAZ, bound for the Port of Los Angeles. The UP 3101 was renumbered (and repainted) from it's Atlanta Summer Olympics Torch Relay livery (ex-UP 1996) three weeks prior to this photograph. UP 3101 is an extended nose or 'snoot' SD40-2, and was built by EMD as the UP 3339 in February 1977. 3101 would be renumbered yet again as the UP 3098 in December 2002 to free up it's digit for another SD40-2 being renumbered to free up it's digit for a new SD70M. Clear as mud?
