Remarks & Notes
This historic photo was secured from my good friend Pete Vowell, of Loyall, KY. The shot depicts the roundhouse crew (probably at shift change) at Loyall about 1928. The men are decked out all over J2A-class Mike 1462, an engine built from scratch at L&N's shops at South Louisville, KY. This image reminds us of the labor intensive days of steam, and how dominant the US railroad industry was as an employer and major economic engine in the country. While CSX still bases crews at Loyall, the engine facility does not fuel, sand or service the units based there--and there are zero employees. Quite a change! The turntable is also long gone, and the remains of the roundhouse finally succumbed a few years ago.
