Remarks & Notes
Running five hours behind schedule, Amtrak's Desert Wind train #36 skirts the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake at Lake Point, Utah. A Union Pacific mixed freight train is running parallel to the Desert Wind on the former Western Pacific mainline to California. Busy Interstate 80 is sandwiched between the two about 20 miles west of downtown Salt Lake City. The Desert Wind ran between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City where it connected to the Pioneer from Seattle and the California Zephyr from Oakland to Chicago. Trains #35 and #36 made their final trips on May 10, 1997.

Depicts Amtrak's "Desert Wind" service, which operated from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, via Las Vegas. Its discontinuance in 1997 left the lower Intermountain region, including Las Vegas, without any passenger rail service since.

Pictures of things often unseen in the world of railroading. Interesting equipment, operations, and people that help the railroad go around.
