A Santa Fe freight climbs the Arizona Divide west of Flagstaff, Arizona, on July 8, 1986. Leading the westbound train is a former Amtrak SDP40F, now labeled as a SDF40-2 by the Santa Fe after being overhauled and modified for freight service by the San Bernardino Shops. Trailing No. 5256 is a SD45, a SD40-2 and a pair of GE C30-7s.
Freight Cowls are standard locomotives that have a hood that extends the full width of the locomotive. Sadly, most Freight Cowls have been retired, but a few still run on short lines.
