Through the hills....literally. A few rays of sunlight highlight the exhaust plume of Crossett Western #10 as she emerges from West Portal of the 300 ft long tunnel near Mouton Falls, on her way toward Battle Ground.
The tunnel you see here was constructed in 1901 by the Portland, Vancouver and Yakima Railroad, and is carved out of solid rock and requires no support on the inside. You can see Engineer Luke Johnson leaning out of the cab for a clear look ahead, as both approaches to this tunnel are very narrow cuts, which are heavily lined with lush vegetation.
