Flares Through the Flathead: A trio of Montana Rail Link SD45-2s pull an eastbound manifest freight out of BNSF Railway's Whitefish, Montana yard just moments after sunset on January 20, 2015. BNSF has been leasing a dozen MRL SD45-2s for the past year - nine are assigned to BNSF trains that work across MRL and three are assigned to the Havre area on BNSF's Hi Line. In mid-January, the Havre triplets made a rare trip west to Spokane, Washington. A few days later they returned east through the Flathead Valley. Just behind the cab of the lead unit are the slopes of Whitefish Mountain Resort.
