CNW 6730, the last unit of a purchase of 30 used Alco C628s from Norfolk & Western shows off its new paint job in late afternoon sun at Altoona, WI. These units were in heavy use on the Twin Cities Division between Chicago, Minneapolis and Superior (WI). At the time they were the heaviest locomotives on CNW, weighing in just over 400,000 lbs., and the wear on the trackage was noticeable. As new SD40-2s arrived and FM units got retired, the Alcos found a home in upper Michigan hauling iron ore for CNW.
