Remarks & Notes
The normal definition of a unit train is a train carrying a single commodity, such as grain, coal, or oil. An alternate type of unit train may be one that has a large number of locomotive units. Such is the case here, as Mail-9 passes the one-time site of LVs Richards yard with a whopping mix of twelve B36-7s and GP40-2s. Three of these locomotives were the usual power for mail and other trailer van trains at this time, but Mail-9 frequently carried extra units. Apparently it was the preferred train for power-balancing moves.
