An eastbound manifest approaches Allentown yard from Conrail’s East Penn line. Two long-time Lehigh Valley energy industry landmarks are visible in this view. To the right of the locomotives is the six million cubic foot natural gas storage tank built by the Allentown-Bethlehem Gas Company in 1930. Visible above the third and fourth cars is the1926 24-story headquarters building of the Pennsylvania Power & Light Company, subject of an urban legend that it was the prototype of the Daily Planet building in the 1950’s Superman TV series. The gas tank was dismantled in 2004, while the 322 foot tall structure continues to serve the electric utility.
