A pair of Conrail Geeps shuffle coal hoppers at Ashtabula, OH on a typically dreary March day in 1981. Conrail was nearing its fifth anniversary, the country was in a recession, and Stanley Crane had taken over leadership of the nationalized carrier. Many changes would result, and Conrail would become profitable to the point where CSX and NS would ultimately acquire it. But back in 1981, there was still much work to be done, and much of the motive power was pretty tired.
