A Southern Pacific westbound passes the train order station (the caboose on the right) at Dike, the SP's name for Devore, California. Opened in 1967, this is the SP's Palmdale Cutoff, which allowed trains to bypass congested Los Angeles as they traveled from between northern California and Texas. As evidenced by the former caboose converted to a trainorder office, this line is "dark territory" (unsignaled). This train is powered by SD45 8917 and an SD40T-2, a U33C and an SD45T-2. On an adjacent track is another train, belonging to either the Santa Fe or the Union Pacific. (Those tracks are owned by Santa Fe, but UP has trackage rights.)
