Taken from the cab of Conrail train ABP-1, this scene is looking northward (timetable east) as the train passes through Bangor, Pennsylvania on the former DL&W/EL Bangor & Portland Division. The small yard is still about the same as it was in EL days, but the roundhouse was substantially demolished a year or two before this photo was taken. One end wall of the roundhouse remains, and a storage shed has been built against it in the left side where the interior had been. The brick appendage to the right of the remaining roundhouse wall was the agent’s office. As a teen, I would stop by and get a lineup from agent George Moyer, and later, Bob Stafford. In the office was a huge chalkboard for crew assignments, with large “Bangor & Portland Railroad” lettering across the top. I often wonder if that chalkboard was rescued before the office was demolished. Today everything is gone, and a single track remains.
