A pair of ex-Western Pacific GP35s pull two ex-Southern Pacific Daylight cars on an excursion in Washington's Palouse region. The train is operating on the former Union Pacific branch between Hooper and Moscow, Idaho. The diamond the train is about to cross was where UP crossed Northern Pacific's branch to Lewiston, Idaho. Washington State University received inbound loads of coal for its physical plant on the spur in the foreground.
Today, the diamond is gone. The former UP line has been abandoned east of Colfax, and is a hiking trail from this point to Moscow. WSU converted the physical plant to run on natural gas a few years later, which eliminated the coal traffic. There is currently no rail operation into Pullman.
