Scanned from a damaged slide.....September 11th was very fresh in the minds of Americans and the rest of the world that following Saturday on what would be a newly insecure visit to Guilford's west end. At that time, there weren't many die hard railfans covering District 4 regularly. However, a block of the "usual" core still made the trek to East Deerfield and points West. Everybody was unsure how railroads and railfans would respond to one another in this newly unfamiliar and vulnerable era. Sticking close to previously acceptable photo locations, Tunnel Road in Rowe at MP 415 was one such spot where we didn't have to worry much about things. Having already seen an eastbound down the siding, westbound EDRJ would be next and have the main for it's run to Hoosac Tunnel's East Portal. As it rounded the corner under what was left of the old signal bridge, smiles emerged at the sight of a big American flag above the cab roof. A nice roll-by was accompanied by a "thumbs up" exchange with conductor J.C. Scappace. From what I've heard, he recently passed away. RIP, and you'll live on in this photo
