Remarks & Notes
Santa Fe SD40-2 5023 was but two months old when photographed on the point of an eastbound freight in Fullerton, California, in January 1978. This engine has a 123" long nose in order to house Locotrol equipment. (Locotrol, a product of GE Transportation Systems, permits locomotives to be distributed throughout the length of a train, allowing for unmanned helpers in mountainous territory.
