Beside the usual lineup, Union Pacific’s Cheyenne diesel shop has a visitor. It’s the day before a Denver – Laramie excursion, and 4-6-6-4 3985 is having its boiler warmed up by the shop’s steam supply. A gradual warm-up helps to relieve boiler stress that results from a faster change of temperature.
